Key takeaways
- Closest: Wayanad, about 73 km and 2–2.5 hours from Kozhikode — ideal for one night.
- Best weekend by road: Ooty (5–6 hours) or Coorg (4.5–5 hours).
- Worth a longer trip: Munnar (about 7 hours) and Kodaikanal (7–8 hours).
- 2026 rules: Ooty and Kodaikanal need a Tamil Nadu vehicle e-pass; Munnar’s Eravikulam park closes 1 February–31 March.
From Kozhikode, Wayanad is the easiest hill station for a quick break, Ooty and Coorg suit a two-night weekend, and Munnar and Kodaikanal are best for a trip of three nights or more. Choose by how far you want to drive, the season, and what you want to do — tea hills, a toy train, coffee estates or waterfalls. The distances below are typical drive times, and the rules come from official state sources.

Wayanad: the closest escape
Up the Thamarassery ghat, Wayanad has Lakkidi viewpoint, Pookode Lake, Banasura Sagar dam, Edakkal Caves and Soochipara falls. Edakkal Caves are closed on Mondays and have a daily visitor limit. During red-alert monsoon days, treks and some waterfalls close, and the Mundakkai–Chooralmala landslide area is off limits. See our Wayanad weekend package.
Ooty and Coonoor: gardens, lake and toy train
Ooty has the Botanical and Rose Gardens, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta peak and Pykara falls, with Coonoor’s tea viewpoints nearby. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train from Mettupalayam is a UNESCO World Heritage ride — book early on IRCTC.
- Private vehicles need a Tamil Nadu e-pass to enter the Nilgiris; daily entries are capped in April–June.
- Single-use plastics, including PET water bottles, are banned, with fines.
- The Bandipur–Mudumalai road is closed from 9 pm to 6 am, so plan daylight drives.
Coorg: coffee country
Coorg is for slow mornings on a coffee estate, Abbey Falls, Raja’s Seat at sunset and the Mandalpatti viewpoint (local jeeps only). Dubare elephant camp reopened on 20 September 2026 for viewing only, from behind barricades. Mysore Palace is a few hours away and makes an easy add-on.
Munnar: tea hills and a houseboat to follow
Munnar’s tea estates, Eravikulam National Park (home of the Nilgiri tahr), Mattupetty Dam and Top Station make it Kerala’s favourite honeymoon hill station. Eravikulam is closed every year from 1 February to 31 March for the tahr calving season, and the Tea Museum is closed on Mondays. Most couples add Thekkady and a night on an Alleppey houseboat.
Kodaikanal: the quieter long trip
Kodaikanal’s star-shaped lake, Coaker’s Walk and Pillar Rocks are best from April to June, according to Tamil Nadu Tourism. It is the furthest of the five, so plan at least two nights. Private vehicles need the same Tamil Nadu e-pass as Ooty.
Which should you choose?

- Two nights with children: Ooty, with the toy train if you can get seats.
- Two nights as a couple: a Coorg coffee-estate stay.
- Honeymoon or a long weekend: Munnar with an Alleppey houseboat.
- Summer holidays (April–June): Kodaikanal or Ooty — book early.
