Key takeaways

  • Validity is the window in which you may enter. Duration of stay is how long you may remain. They are separate fields on your visa.
  • A visa valid for a year does not let you stay a year. Read the duration of stay field.
  • Schengen allows 90 days in any 180-day period. The 180 days roll forward daily. They do not reset on 1 January.
  • The officer at the border decides what you are actually granted, and it can be less than you expect.
  • Overstaying can bring fines, removal, a re-entry ban and harder applications later. Your dates are your responsibility. We cannot fix an overstay afterwards.

A visa has two separate time limits: the window in which you may enter a country, and the number of days you may stay once you are in, and people who confuse the two are the ones who overstay. A visa valid for a year may allow only 30 or 90 days at a time. Stay one day past the permitted stay and you have overstayed, even with months of validity left.

This catches many first-time travellers from Kerala. They read “valid until” as “you can stay until”. Below: where to look on your visa, how Schengen counting works, and how to avoid the trap.

Two clocks, not one

  • Validity runs from “valid from” to “valid until”. It tells you when you may arrive. The EU Visa Code treats it separately from the length of the authorised stay.
  • Duration of stay starts when you enter and covers the days you may remain.

The UK shows it clearly. On GOV.UK, a long-term Standard Visitor visa lasts 2, 5 or 10 years, but you can stay a maximum of 6 months on each visit.

How to read the fields on your visa

Layouts differ by country. These are the usual labels. If yours differ, ask us before you travel.

FieldWhat it actually controlsCommon mistake
Valid fromThe first day you may enter.Flying a day early because the ticket was cheaper.
Valid untilThe last day you may enter. It ends the entry window.Reading it as the day you may stay until.
Duration of stayThe days you may remain on each visit. Not reading it. This field decides whether you overstay.
Number of entriesHow many times you may enter. Single means once.Leaving for a weekend trip on a single-entry visa.
TypeThe kind of visa and the purpose it was issued for.Assuming it matches what you applied for.

Check your visa on the day it is issued. Read it against your application: name, passport number, dates, duration and entries. If anything does not match, raise it at once. A mistake found then is far easier to correct than one found at the airport. You can also confirm an issued visa on the official portal through our visa status check page.

Single entry and multiple entry

The EU Visa Code says a visa may be issued for one, two or multiple entries. A single-entry visa is used up once you enter and leave, whatever validity remains. A multiple-entry visa allows several entries but does not remove the stay limit. Each visit still has a maximum, and for Schengen all visits together must fit the 90-in-180 rule. If you plan any side trip, say so before applying. See our visit visa page.

The Schengen rule: 90 days in any 180

Schengen covers most of continental Europe, including France and Germany. The Schengen Borders Code sets a stay of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period, and says this means considering the 180-day period preceding each day of stay. So:

  • The window rolls. On each day, look back 180 days and count your days in the area. The count must not exceed 90.
  • It is not a calendar year. Nothing resets on 1 January. November days still count in March.
  • Entry day and exit day both count. The Code says the date of entry is the first day of stay and the date of exit is the last.
  • All Schengen countries share one allowance. 30 days in Germany and 60 in France is 90 days.

The European Commission publishes an official short-stay calculator. Its page says to count back 180 days from each day of your stay, and that if your visa sticker shows a period shorter than 90 days, you should not use the calculator. The sticker is then your limit. Respect the tighter of the two.

A worked example (an illustration, not a real visa)

Illustration only. The dates are invented to show the method. A traveller makes two trips on a multiple-entry Schengen visa.

  • Trip one: 1 March to 30 April 2027, counting both days. That is 31 plus 30, so 61 days.
  • Trip two: returns on 15 June 2027. How long can they stay?

On 15 June, looking back 180 days takes in all 61 days of trip one. Adding 15 June makes 62. The 90th day is 13 July 2027, so trip two can last 29 days. On 14 July the count would be 91, because the window still holds all of trip one. That is an overstay, even if the visa has months left. Use the Commission calculator on your own dates.

What if you enter on the last day of validity?

That day is still inside the entry window. But what it means for your stay differs by destination, and we will not guess. Some count your stay from the day you enter. Others may tie it to the visa’s end date. If your “valid until” date is close to your travel date, ask the embassy or official portal before you book. Delays can push an arrival past your date, so never plan to arrive on the final day. When you book flight tickets, choose dates that sit comfortably inside your visa.

The officer at the border decides

A visa does not guarantee entry or fix your stay. Under the Schengen Borders Code you must justify the purpose and conditions of your stay and show sufficient means, and the border guard may ask for supporting documents. In the United States the stay is set by the officer: the State Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual refers to the period of stay authorised by the Department of Homeland Security, recorded on the I-94. The visa may be valid for years. The date on your arrival record is the one that counts.

On arrival, check what you were given. If the date to leave is shorter than you expected, ask on the spot.

Overstaying: what it costs

Penalties are set by each destination and they change. They can include fines, removal, a re-entry ban and harder applications later. We give a figure only where we have the government’s own. What we checked on 26 October 2026:

  • UAE. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) lists a fine of AED 50 per day for expiry of a foreigner’s permitted stay, on its fine payment service page (last updated 11 December 2024). Your own total depends on your case, so check the official fines inquiry.
  • Schengen area. If your passport has no entry stamp, the authorities may presume you have not respected the duration of stay, unless you show credible evidence such as tickets. If it is not rebutted, you may be returned under national law.
  • United States. The State Department’s manual says staying beyond the authorised period voids the visa you entered on. It also describes bars on future visas after unlawful presence of more than 180 days: three years in some cases, and ten years where it is a year or more.

For Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, the UK, Thailand and Singapore, we do not quote figures. Gulf states set their own fines and can impose re-entry bans, and the details vary. Check the destination’s own immigration authority.

Grace periods: do not assume one

The EU Visa Code says a Schengen visa’s validity includes an extra 15 days of grace, which Member States may decline to give. That is added to validity. It is not a promise of extra days of stay, so do not plan around it. Count a grace period only if the destination’s government publishes one for your visa type.

Your dates are your responsibility

The dates on your visa, and the date you leave, are yours to manage. Fines, bans and records are decided by the destination, and an agency cannot reverse an overstay afterwards. We can help only before you travel.

Before you fly

  • Read duration of stay, not just valid until.
  • Write down your latest legal exit date and set a reminder.
  • For Schengen, count earlier trips in the last 180 days with the official calculator.
  • Book your return inside the permitted stay, with margin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between visa validity and duration of stay?

Validity is the period in which you may enter. Duration of stay is how many days you may remain once in. They are separate fields.

Does visa validity mean I can stay that long?

No. GOV.UK says a long-term Standard Visitor visa lasts 2, 5 or 10 years but allows a maximum of 6 months on each visit.

How does the 90 days in 180 days rule work?

In the Schengen area you may stay no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. On each day, count back 180 days and add your days in the area. Entry and exit days both count.

Is the 180 days a calendar year?

No. It is a rolling window that moves forward every day.

Can I enter on the last day my visa is valid?

It is inside the entry window, but what it means for your stay differs by destination. Check with the embassy or portal first, and avoid the last day.

What happens if I overstay my visa?

It depends on the country: fines, removal, a re-entry ban and harder future applications are possible. We cannot fix an overstay afterwards.

Can the border officer give me fewer days than I expect?

Yes. The officer decides at the border. In the United States the I-94 date, not the visa, sets when you must leave. Check what you are given.

Does a single-entry visa work again after I leave?

No. It covers one entry and is used once you have entered and left, even if validity remains.
