Key takeaways

  • A visit visa and a tourist visa are largely the same thing: permission to enter a country for a short stay. The name changes with the region.
  • The Gulf says visit visa and the visa is often arranged through a sponsor. Most other countries say tourist or visitor visa, and you apply yourself.
  • Neither lets you work, paid or unpaid.
  • Durations, extensions and conversion rules differ by country and change. Read the date on the official page.
  • The destination government decides which category applies to you. You do not choose it, and neither does an agency.

Yes, a visit visa and a tourist visa are largely the same kind of visa: a short-stay permission to enter a country for a visit, not to live or work there. The difference is mostly the name and the way you apply. The Gulf calls it a visit visa and usually runs it through a sponsor. Most of the rest of the world calls it a tourist or visitor visa and asks you to apply to the government yourself.

Why there are two names

No world rule says “visit visa” or “tourist visa”. Each country chooses its own label. Gulf government systems say visit visa, so Kerala travellers who go there use that phrase. Europe, the UK and South-East Asia say tourist or visitor visa.

Some countries use “visit visa” as a wider label. On 29 September 2025 the UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) announced four new visit visa categories and amended others, such as visiting a friend or relative.

The Gulf: the visit visa and sponsorship

In the Gulf, a visit visa is commonly arranged by a party in the country, not by the traveller alone. We state only what the official pages say.

  • UAE. The government portal (updated 1 October 2026) says you can apply through airlines, hotels and travel agents, and that UAE embassies do not issue tourist visas. With a hotel or agent you buy the ticket through them and keep a booking with that hotel. It also lists a five-year multiple-entry visa that uses self-sponsorship, so a sponsor is usual but not the only route.
  • Oman. The Royal Oman Police eVisa portal lists four classes: resident sponsored, resident unsponsored, visit sponsored and visit unsponsored.
  • Bahrain. The eVisa site says a visa can be obtained through a local company, organisation or citizen. If your nationality is not on the eligible list, you need a guarantor, such as your airline, your place of stay, a Bahrain travel agent, or a Bahrain company or citizen.
  • Qatar. The Ministry of Interior lists the Hayya platform with four entry permit types, including a tourist visa and an entry visa for those accompanying GCC citizens.
  • Saudi Arabia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a personal visit request that a Saudi citizen submits on its visa platform. See our Saudi Arabia visa guide for the other routes.

We have not stated Kuwait’s rules, because we could not confirm them from a complete official page. See the Kuwait visa guide or ask us.

Who can sponsor you, and what the sponsor undertakes

A sponsor is the person or business in the destination country that the authority treats as responsible for your visit. The official pages name:

  • A relative or friend who lives there. The ICP announcement sets a minimum monthly income for the sponsor: AED 4,000 for a first-degree relative, AED 8,000 for a second- or third-degree relative and AED 15,000 for a friend (as announced 29 September 2025; confirm current figures).
  • A company or organisation. For the UAE events visit visa, the sponsor or host must be a public or private sector entity.
  • A hotel, travel agent or airline. The route named by the UAE portal and by Bahrain’s guarantor list.

In plain terms, the sponsor puts their name and standing behind your visit. The exact legal duties, such as who answers if a visitor overstays, are set by each country, and we did not find them on the official pages we read, so we do not state them. Ask any sponsor to read the authority’s own conditions first. It is a serious step for them.

The rest of the world: the tourist or visitor visa

Outside the Gulf you usually apply in your own name through the government’s channel:

  • United Kingdom. The category is Standard Visitor. You apply online, then attend a visa application centre where fingerprints and a photo are taken (GOV.UK).
  • Schengen area (for example France). Non-EU nationals need a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and biometrics are provided when required (European Commission).
  • Singapore. India is listed as needing a visa. You apply through an authorised visa agent or at the nearest Singapore mission (ICA).
  • Thailand. The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi says all applicants apply through thaievisa.go.th.

What a visit visa does not permit

It does not permit you to work. The UAE government says UAE law strictly prohibits working on a visit or tourist visa, whether for pay or without compensation. GOV.UK says a UK Standard Visitor cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company, apart from narrow exceptions. Study depends on the country, so never assume. A visit visa is also not residence. The UAE says a residency visa is mandatory for expatriates who wish to live or work there.

Albah does not arrange jobs, employment or work visas. We hold no recruitment licence. If someone says to travel on a visit visa and “change it there”, be careful. Whether a visit visa can become a work visa is for the destination government, not an agency or employer. We found no official statement making it a normal route in any country covered here.

How long you can stay, and extensions

These are the figures we confirmed on official pages on 26 October 2026. Where we could not confirm a figure, we give none.

  • UAE. The five-year multiple-entry visa allows 90 days on each visit and can be extended for a further 90 days. The GCC resident e-visa gives 30 days and can be extended once for 30 days (u.ae, 1 October 2026).
  • United Kingdom. Usually up to 6 months as a Standard Visitor, and you might be able to apply to stay longer in certain circumstances (GOV.UK).
  • Schengen area. Up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • Thailand. A tourist visa allows up to 60 days per entry. A single-entry visa is valid for 3 months and a multiple-entry visa for 6 months. The embassy also lists a 30-day visa exemption for Indian ordinary passports, effective from 15 September 2026 until further announcement.
  • United States. An immigration officer sets your stay on admission and records it on the I-94. To stay longer you must file Form I-539 with USCIS before that date (USCIS).

Validity (when you can enter) and permitted stay are different periods.

The most important point: the government decides

You do not pick the category. The destination government decides which visa applies, how long it lasts, and whether you may enter. So apply under your real purpose: family visit for family, business category for business, never tourist for something else. And a visa is not a guarantee of entry. Bahrain’s eVisa site says holding a visa does not guarantee entry and that you must meet all conditions on arrival. No agency can promise a visa. The decision belongs to the government.

On Umrah: whether it can be done on a visit visa depends on current Saudi policy and the season, and the rules have changed more than once. We state no rule here. See the Saudi Arabia visa guide and our Umrah packages from Calicut.

What to do next

Decide your real purpose, then open your destination’s guide: UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, United Kingdom, France, Singapore or Thailand. Our visa services page explains how we help; the visa status check tracks an application. Certificates may need attestation. Book your flight ticket after the visa is confirmed. New to this? Frequently asked questions

Is visit visa and tourist visa the same?

Largely, yes. Both are short-stay permissions to enter for a visit. The Gulf says visit visa and often uses a sponsor. Most other countries say tourist visa and expect you to apply yourself.

Can I work on a visit visa?

No. The UAE government says UAE law strictly prohibits working on a visit or tourist visa, paid or unpaid. Albah does not arrange jobs or work visas.

Who can sponsor my visit visa?

It depends on the country. Official pages name a relative or friend living there, a company, a hotel, a travel agent or an airline. The UAE sets minimum incomes for relatives and friends who sponsor (ICP, 29 September 2025).

Can a visit visa be extended?

Sometimes. The UAE says its five-year multiple-entry visa can be extended for a further 90 days. Bahrain allows extension in the country. The US needs Form I-539 before the I-94 date. Each country decides.

Can I convert a visit visa into a work visa?

That is for the destination government, not an agency. We found no official statement making it a normal route. Do not accept a job offer that depends on converting a visit visa after arrival.

Which is easier to get?

Neither, in general. A Gulf visit visa is often filed by a sponsor or authorised party. Elsewhere you file your own application. The government decides either way.

Can I do Umrah on a visit visa?

It depends on current Saudi policy and the season, and the rules have changed more than once. See our Saudi Arabia visa guide at /visa/saudi-arabia/ for the current position.

Sources were checked on 26 October 2026. Visa rules change often. This is general information, not a promise of any visa outcome, and the decision rests with the destination government. Check the official page for your country, or ask us, before you apply.
