Goa at a glance
Goa is the easiest beach holiday from Kerala — an overnight train from Kozhikode or a short flight from Kochi. North Goa has the busy beaches, forts and nightlife; South Goa is quieter, with coves like Palolem; Old Goa has the UNESCO-listed churches.
Best time to visit
- November to February is the best season. December is the peak rush, so book early.
- October and March are shoulder months with fewer crowds.
- June to September is monsoon: red flags on beaches, water sports stop, and the Dudhsagar jeep safari is closed until about October.
Beach safety and local rules
- Swim only between the red-and-yellow flags, from 7 am to sunset, as advised by Goa's lifeguard service.
- Alcohol, smoking and vehicles are not allowed on beaches, and turtle-nesting areas are protected.
- Since July 2026, Goa's Tourism Department fines visitors ₹5,000 to ₹1 lakh for nuisances such as drinking in unpermitted places, littering, driving on sand, and buying tickets from unofficial counters.
Getting there from Kozhikode
- By train: Kozhikode to Madgaon typically takes 8–10 hours (for example, the Netravati or Mangala Lakshadweep Express). The monsoon timetable (mid-June to 20 October) slows trains on the Konkan line.
- By air: there is no nonstop flight from Calicut; Kochi has nonstop flights to Dabolim (about 1 hour 20 minutes). Goa has two airports: Mopa (north) and Dabolim (south).
