In India you apply for a new or renewed passport online on the Passport Seva portal, book an appointment and visit a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK with original documents. In north Kerala, the Regional Passport Office Kozhikode covers Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. From 1 July 2026 a normal 36-page adult passport costs ₹2,500, and Tatkaal costs ₹5,000 in total.

Who handles Indian passports in Kerala

How to apply or renew, step by step

  1. Register and log in on the official Passport Seva portal (passportindia.gov.in).3
  2. Fill in the application for a fresh passport or re-issue. You can fetch birth and address proofs from DigiLocker while filling in the form.4
  3. Pay the fee online and book an appointment at a PSK or POPSK.35
  4. Visit the Kendra on the appointment day with original documents and self-attested copies.67
  5. Complete police verification. For most fresh passports it is done before the passport is issued; for Tatkaal it is done after issue.89

Documents for renewal (re-issue)

  • Your old passport (for re-issue).10
  • Proof of present address — Aadhaar or e-Aadhaar is accepted, and the official list has 12 accepted documents.7
  • Proof of date of birth if needed. For people born on or after 1 October 2023, only the birth certificate is accepted. Aadhaar is not on the date-of-birth list.6
  • For Tatkaal: adults also give any three documents from the official list of 13 (such as Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID or driving licence); minors give two.9

How long it takes

  • Tatkaal: once the application is granted, the passport is dispatched on the third working day, not counting the day of application.9
  • Normal applications usually need police verification before the passport is issued, so the time depends on verification.8
  • The MEA's mPassport Police app lets police complete verification digitally.11

Passports for children

  • From 1 July 2026, a minor's passport is valid for 5 years or until the child turns 18, whichever is earlier. Children aged 15–18 can choose a 10-year passport.5
  • For a child born on or after 1 October 2023, the birth certificate is the only accepted proof of date of birth.6

Lost or stolen passport

  • Apply for re-issue of a lost or damaged passport on the Passport Seva portal. The fee is ₹5,000 (36 pages) or ₹6,000 (60 pages).5
  • Tatkaal is not allowed for re-issue of a lost or stolen passport.9

What changed recently

  • 1 July 2026: New passport fees: ₹2,500 for a 36-page adult passport (was ₹1,500) and ₹3,500 for 60 pages (was ₹2,000); the Tatkaal surcharge is now ₹2,500. Minor passports now last until age 18.512
  • 21 April 2025: RPO Kozhikode moved to Passport Seva Programme 2.0 and began issuing e-passports.1
