Documents to prepare

  • Passport issued within the last 10 years, valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area, with at least two blank pages.6
  • Completed application form and the VFS Italy tourist visa checklist documents (all items are mandatory, even if a travel company arranges flights or hotels).3
  • Travel medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation, valid across Schengen, minimum EUR 30,000.63
  • Proof of purpose, accommodation, funds and intention to return.2
  • First-time applicants must give 10 fingerprints and a photo in person; biometrics are stored for 59 months.1

Before you fly and on arrival

  • The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is fully operational since 10 April 2026. Your face image and fingerprints are recorded at the border instead of a passport stamp.9
  • ETIAS is only for visa-exempt nationalities. Indians travelling on a Schengen visa do not need ETIAS.10

  • VFS Global runs an Italy visa centre in Kochi (Cochin), Monday to Friday 08:00–16:00. It collects the file and sends it to the Mumbai consulate, which alone decides.45

Extending your stay

  • A Schengen visa allows a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. Stays over 90 days need an Italian national (D) visa.12
