Key takeaways

  • Refusal grounds are published: Article 32 of the EU Visa Code for Schengen, section 214(b) for the US, the Immigration Rules for the UK.
  • Causes officials name most: doubt about the purpose of the trip, not enough money, doubt that you will leave on time, and documents that cannot be checked or are false.
  • In the systems checked, the visa fee is not refunded after a refusal. UAE federal rules refund issuance fees only.
  • Under Schengen and US rules a refusal does not bar a new application. False documents can cause far worse.
  • The decision belongs to the government. No agent, including Albah, can guarantee a visa.

Most visa refusals come from the same few causes: the officer is not convinced about why you are travelling, how you will pay, or whether you will leave before the visa ends, or the documents cannot be trusted. Each of these is written into law or official guidance. You can prepare for all of them. You cannot remove all risk, because the decision is the government’s and not ours.

This guide covers Schengen, UK, US and UAE visas for tourism, visits and family. Facts were checked on 26 October 2026. For help preparing a visit application, see our visa services.

The refusal grounds that governments publish

Schengen visas

Article 32 of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 says a visa shall be refused if the applicant, among other grounds:

  • presents a false, counterfeit or forged travel document;
  • does not justify the purpose and conditions of the intended stay;
  • does not prove sufficient means of subsistence, for the stay and for the return home;
  • has already stayed 90 days in the current 180-day period;
  • has a Schengen Information System alert for refusal of entry, or is considered a threat to public policy, internal security, public health or international relations;
  • does not hold adequate travel medical insurance, where it applies.

A separate ground covers reasonable doubts about the authenticity of your documents, the truth of their contents, the reliability of what you say, or your intention to leave before the visa expires. The refusal must be given to you on a standard form with the reasons.

UK Standard Visitor visas

Appendix V of the Immigration Rules requires you to be a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of the visit, with enough funds for all reasonable costs. A third party can pay only if they have a genuine professional or personal relationship with you. The suitability rules say an application must be refused if the decision maker is satisfied you used deception. It may be refused if you gave false information or did not disclose relevant facts.

US visitor visas

The State Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual says nonimmigrant cases are most often refused under section 214(b). Applicants are presumed to be intending immigrants until they convince the officer otherwise, and the burden of proof is on them. The manual adds that 214(b) is more than ties: it means you did not qualify for the visa category.

UAE visas

We found no published list of refusal grounds on the UAE federal pages checked, so we list none. See our UAE visa guide and the UAE visit visa from Kerala post.

Which visas are refused most?

No official source we found ranks visa types by refusal rate for Indian applicants, so we name none. The European Commission reported a worldwide Schengen short-stay refusal rate of 14.6% for 2025 (14.8% in 2024), and India as the third-largest applicant country with 1.15 million applications. Rates vary widely by country: the release gives 6.4% for Russia and 53.4% for Burundi. The Commission publishes figures by consulate, and the UK Home Office publishes immigration statistics tables. We quote no India-specific rate. Check the current release yourself.

What “proof of funds” means to an officer

It does not mean a large balance. It means your money matches your plan. Under the EU Visa Code, officers assess means against the length and purpose of the stay, using reference amounts for budget board and lodging multiplied by the days you stay. Proof of sponsorship or private accommodation can count too. The UK rule is that you can cover all reasonable costs. The US embassy in India lists being able to pay for the trip.

  • Funds should cover the trip you describe, including the return home.
  • If someone else pays, show their relationship to you and their ability to pay.
  • Documents must be checkable. The EU Visa Code says examination rests on the authenticity of documents and the truth of your statements.
  • Never submit a document you cannot explain.

What “intention to return” means to an officer

Officers decide whether the evidence supports that you will go home. The EU Visa Code asks for information that lets them assess your intention to leave before the visa expires. The UK rule is that you will leave at the end of the visit. The US embassy in India says the officer must be convinced that you have a home outside the US you will not abandon and will leave when the purpose of travel is complete.

That embassy explains ties as family relationships, employment commitments, possessions and other factors, and says the most common refusal reason is that ties to India were judged not strong enough. US nonimmigrant visas are interview-based, so consistent, honest answers matter. Keep the itinerary real. For flights, see flight tickets. If a destination asks for attested certificates, see attestation.

How refusals differ by destination

Gulf countries run separate systems, so do not assume UAE rules apply to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait or Bahrain. See also our guides for the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

What happens to your fee

Plan on losing it. The EU Visa Code, GOV.UK and the US embassy in India all say the fee is not refunded on refusal. The UAE’s ICP says only issuance fees are refundable, as shown on your receipt. After a US refusal, a new application means paying again, except for some cases where more documents were requested. Charges paid to a visa centre or agent are separate, so ask what is refundable before you pay.

Does a refusal damage future applications?

A refusal alone does not bar you. But it is recorded: Schengen refusals go into the Visa Information System, which officers consult for each application. False information is different. Under the UK suitability rules, deception in an entry clearance application for a visit carries a 10-year re-entry period, and not disclosing relevant facts can lead to refusal. The US manual contrasts 214(b) with other, permanent refusals under section 212(a). Answer every question truthfully, including about earlier refusals.

What to do after a refusal

  1. Read the refusal notice. Schengen rules require it to state the reasons.
  2. Note the deadline. Germany: one month. France: 30 days.
  3. Choose: challenge or reapply. The German mission says most rejections result from incomplete or unverifiable documentation.
  4. If you reapply, change something real. The US embassy in India says identical information in a second interview rarely gets a different result.
  5. Do not hide the refusal.
  6. Track your case on the official status portals.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reapply after visa rejection?

Yes, per the official pages for Germany and the US. Germany’s mission in India says there is no cooling or locking period. The US embassy says reapply with new information or changed circumstances. You pay the fee again.

Does visa rejection affect future visas?

Not automatically. The EU Visa Code says a previous refusal does not lead to an automatic refusal. It is recorded, and false documents are treated far more seriously.

Which visa has the highest rejection rate?

We found no official ranking of visa types for Indian applicants. The European Commission reported a 14.6% worldwide Schengen refusal rate for 2025, with large differences between countries.

Is the visa fee refunded if refused?

Not in the systems checked. The EU Visa Code, GOV.UK and the US embassy in India say no. In the UAE only issuance fees are refundable.

Can I appeal a Schengen visa refusal?

Yes, under the national law of the deciding country. Germany: a lawsuit in Berlin within one month. France: a prior written appeal in French within 30 days.

Can I appeal a UK visit visa refusal?

Visitor is not among the routes listed as eligible for administrative review. Your refusal notice states what applies to you.

Does 214(b) mean my ties to India are weak?

Not only that. The State Department manual says 214(b) means you did not qualify for the visa category. Failing to show you are not an intending immigrant is the most common reason.
