Quick answer
Fill in the form on the Global Passport Seva portal (mportal.passportindia.gov.in/mission), print it, and submit it in person at a VFS Global centre by appointment only. Appointments across the UK are booked centrally through the High Commission's appointment page. An adult 36-page re-issue costs £93 (Tatkal £185), plus ICWF and VFS charges not verified here. Edinburgh says passports take about 4–6 weeks and it offers no Tatkal.
Who handles Indian passports in UK
- High Commission of India, London, and the Consulates General in Birmingham and Edinburgh. Each processes applications from its own consular jurisdiction.12
- Passport applications are taken only by the outsourced provider VFS Global, not in person at the Consulate.32
- Appointments for all outsourced services across the UK are managed centrally on the High Commission site: https://www.hcilondon.gov.in/appointment_home/1
- Edinburgh VFS centre: Ponton Street, Edinburgh EH3 9QQ, for Indian consular services only (moved December 2024).4
- VFS helplines listed by CGI Birmingham: +44 203 793 8629 / +44 203 788 4666 (Mon–Fri 08:30–15:30), info.inuk@vfshelpline.com.5
How to apply or renew, step by step
- Fill in and submit the form online at https://mportal.passportindia.gov.in/mission/. Upload all supporting documents, your photo and your signature or thumb impression, then print the form.2
- Book an appointment. Edinburgh's page links to the VFS login at https://visa.vfsglobal.com/gbr/en/ind/login. There are no walk-ins and no postal applications.62
- Go to VFS in person, or send a close family member with a signed authorisation, with the printout, original passport, copies and fee. Agents and solicitors are not allowed.2
- Your old passport is kept during processing.7
- Collect the new passport from VFS, or pay VFS for postal or courier delivery.2
- Emergency (bereavement or serious illness), Edinburgh jurisdiction: email ppt.edinburgh@mea.gov.in with evidence.6
Documents for renewal (re-issue)
- Adult re-issue (36 or 60 pages): online form; current passport with self-attested copies of the first, last, endorsement and visa pages; your UK entry visa; your UK eVisa status with share code, or ILR; Annexure E; and an undertaking if your passport is held by the UK Home Office.7
- Change of address: self-attested address proof, e.g. election ID, utility bill, a nationalised-bank passbook with 6 months of statements, or a redacted Aadhaar. For minors, a parent's passport copy is enough.7
- You need an Indian address of yourself, family or someone who can vouch for you during police verification. Tell them beforehand.2
- Adding a spouse: marriage certificate or Annexure J. Removing: divorce decree. Changing a spouse's name: divorce decree or death certificate plus the new marriage certificate or Annexure J. For a full name change, follow the standard name-change procedure.7
- Minor re-issue (5 years or till 18): form signed by both parents; the child's passport, visa and eVisa; both parents' passports and eVisas; birth certificate; Annexure D (or Annexure C for a single parent, notarised if there is no custody order).8
- Bring originals plus one set of self-attested photocopies.7

How long it takes
- Fees effective from 1 July 2026 (per the CGI Birmingham fee table).9
- CGI Edinburgh: roughly 4–6 weeks from submission at VFS in most cases, longer if the police verification report is delayed. The Consulate cannot speed up police verification. Passports are printed in New Delhi and couriered to the Consulate.2
- CGI Edinburgh does not offer Tatkal.2
- CGI Birmingham Tatkal: adults need three valid Indian IDs, minors two. Not available if your passport expired more than 3 years ago or you have no valid visa, or for listed ineligible categories such as single-parent minors. The Consulate decides at its discretion.108
Passport for a child born in UK
- The birth must first be registered with the High Commission or a Consulate within one year. Birth registration under Section 4(1) of the Citizenship Act is handled through VFS.81
- Fresh passport documents: printed application; the birth registration certificate from the Indian High Commission or Consulate; the UK birth certificate; both parents' passports (first and last pages) and eVisas with share codes; the child's eVisa if any; Annexure D signed by both parents; and the parents' marriage certificate.8
- The child need not be present. Both parents come to VFS with original passports, or one parent brings both passports and an authority letter from the other.8
- Both parents also declare that the child has not acquired UK nationality. India does not allow dual citizenship.2
- Fee: £61 for a fresh passport up to age 8 (Tatkal £144).9
Lost or stolen passport
- Report the loss to the police. In England and Wales, CGI Birmingham points to the Met Police online lost-property report. In Scotland, CGI Edinburgh says to file a lost-item report with the police, or lodge it on the Police Scotland website.112
- Re-issue or EC in lieu of a lost or stolen passport, on top of the standard documents: police report, a personal letter to the Passport Officer explaining how it was lost, and Annexure F.112
- If you find the old passport after reporting it lost and have applied for re-issue, do not use it. Tell the Consulate.2
- Emergency Certificate: for one-way travel to India when no valid passport is available and a new one cannot be issued at once. Your existing passport is cancelled. Needs the GPSP form, your current passport and copies, UK visa or eVisa, Annexure E, plus the lost-passport documents where relevant. Fee £12.119
